Abstract

Deforestation remains a major environmental challenge in ASEAN amid rapid economic growth and increasing trade integration. This study examines the effects of economic growth and trade openness on deforestation and investigates the moderating role of governance in five ASEAN countries during 2002–2023. Using panel data, the analysis employs the Fixed Effect Model (FEM) and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results show that economic growth and trade openness significantly affect deforestation. Furthermore, the relationship between economic growth and deforestation follows a U-shaped pattern, indicating that the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis is not supported. Governance has no significant direct effect on deforestation but acts as a pure moderator in the relationships between economic growth, trade openness, and deforestation. These findings suggest that governance shapes the environmental consequences of economic activities rather than directly determining deforestation outcomes. Strengthening governance is therefore essential for promoting sustainable development in ASEAN.
