Abstract

The East Java Core Industrial Area, which encompasses the city of Surabaya, Gresik Regency, Sidoarjo Regency, Mojokerto Regency and Pasuruan Regency, is a hub of industrial activity that plays a vital role in the regional economy. The concentration of industrial activity in this area has the potential to influence the level of inter-regional development inequality. This study aims to analyse the development of industrial agglomeration, regional inequality, and the impact of industrial agglomeration on regional inequality in the East Java Core Industrial Area. The study employs a quantitative approach using secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency. Industrial agglomeration is measured using the Balassa Index, whilst regional inequality is measured using the Williamson Index. The analysis is conducted using panel data regression. The results indicate that industrial agglomeration tends to increase, whilst regional inequality shows a decreasing trend over the study period. Furthermore, industrial agglomeration has a negative and significant effect on regional inequality. These findings suggest that the development of industrial agglomeration is capable of creating an economic spillover effect that supports equitable development across regions within the East Java Core Industrial Area.
