Abstract
The phenomenon of psychological abuse in interpersonal relationships is often difficult to identify because it tends to be implicit and repetitive, one of which is reflected through the behavioral patterns of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). This study aimed to analyze how NPD power relations were represented through the character Andrew in “The Housemaid” (2025). The research employed a qualitative approach based on John Fiske’s semiotic analysis, which consisted of three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The analysis was conducted on 23 scenes representing power relations in two interpersonal contexts, namely Andrew’s marital relationship with Nina and the employer-domestic worker relationship between Andrew and Millie. The findings showed that, at the level of reality, Andrew’s NPD power relations were represented through repetitive patterns of love bombing, gaslighting, verbal manipulation, and arbitrary punishment. At the level of representation, the domination was constructed through cinematographic techniques such as low-angle shots of Andrew and high-angle shots of Nina and Millie. At the ideological level, the film reproduced as well as deconstructed three main ideologies: patriarchy, social class, and gender-based violence. These ideologies were challenged through the resistance shown by Nina and Millie. This study concluded that “The Housemaid” (2025) implicitly and systematically represented NPD power relations through semiotic sign constructions and highlighted the importance of media literacy in understanding patterns of psychological abuse that are normalized within interpersonal relationships.
