Abstract
The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) has an economic structure primarily supported by the education, tourism, and service sectors. Nevertheless, compared to other provinces on Java Island, DIY has a relatively low Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) per capita. On the other hand, DIY records the highest happiness index on Java Island, indicating an interesting development paradox. This condition highlights the importance of understanding the factors that influence regional economic performance as reflected in GRDP. This study aims to analyze the effects of household consumption, investment, and capital expenditure on GRDP in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The study employs a quantitative approach using secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the Regional Budget (APBD) Portal. The data used consist of panel data combining time series data from 2015–2024 and cross-sectional data from five regencies/city in DIY. The analytical method applied is panel data regression. The results show that household consumption and capital expenditure have a positive and significant effect on GRDP, while investment has no significant effect on GRDP. Simultaneously, household consumption, investment, and capital expenditure significantly affect GRDP in DIY. These findings indicate that economic growth in DIY is driven more by household consumption activities and government spending through capital expenditure than by investment. Therefore, local governments need to optimize policies that support household purchasing power, improve the quality of investment to make it more productive and integrated with the region’s leading sectors, and strengthen the effectiveness of capital expenditure allocation for infrastructure and public facility development in order to promote sustainable economic growth.
