Abstract

Red lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Arista) cultivated in lowland areas often experiences growth constraints due to high temperatures and excessive light intensity, resulting in decreased productivity. Gibberellin application and shade use are considered potential strategies to improve plant growth and yield under these conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between gibberellin concentration and shade percentage on the growth and yield of red lettuce cultivated using a vertical farming system. This study was a factorial study with two factors arranged in a split-plot design. The main plot was the shade level, consisting of three treatment levels (0%, 50%, and 75%). The subplot was the gibberellin concentration, consisting of four treatment levels (0, 50, 100, and 150 ppm). The result showed significant interactions between the parameters of plant length, leaf number, leaf area, total fresh weight per plant, fresh weight of the plant canopy, fresh weight of the roots, and root length. Gibberellin concentration significantly affected the harvest index, and shade percentage significantly affected leaf color. The combination of 100 ppm gibberellin and 75% shade percentage resulted in the best growth and yield compared to other treatments.
