Abstract
Torch Ginger (Etlingera elatior Smith) is a tropical plant with high economic value, utilized as a food source, ornamental plant, and industrial raw material. Its development is currently constrained by a prolonged vegetative growth period and suboptimal flowering, resulting in low productivity. This study aimed to examine the effects of paclobutrazol dosage and application method on the growth and flowering of torch ginger. The study was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) consisting of two factors: paclobutrazol dosage (0, 20, 40, and 60 mg/clump) and application method (soil drenching, foliar spraying, and a combination of soil drenching and foliar spraying). Observed parameters included vegetative growth, chlorophyll content, C/N ratio, flowering time, number of flowers, and flower quality. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% level if treatments showed significant effects. The results indicated that increasing paclobutrazol dosage suppressed vegetative growth, characterized by reduced plant height, shortened internodes, and increased stem diameter. The interaction between dosage and application method significantly affected chlorophyll content, C/N ratio, flower weight, and flower diameter. A dosage of 20 mg/clump tended to produce the highest number of flowers, whereas a dosage of 60 mg/clump increased flower weight and size. The combination of a 60 mg/clump dosage with the soil drenching plus spraying method yielded the highest flower weight and diameter. Paclobutrazol was effective in controlling vegetative growth while enhancing flowering; a dosage of 20 mg/clump was suitable for increasing flower quantity, while 60 mg/clump was suitable for improving flower quality. Keywords: torch ginger, paclobutrazol, vegetative growth, flowering, flower quality.
