Abstract
The Field Work Practice was carried out at PT. Sinergi Gula Nusantara Pagottan Sugar Factory (PG) in Madiun from August 1 to September 30, 2025. This factory has a milling capacity that has been increased to 3,000 to 3,300 TCD (Ton Cane Day). The general purpose of this activity is to learn about the process of turning sugarcane raw materials into sugar comprehensively, observe industry equipment specifications, and understand various factory support systems. The main production process at PG Pagottan uses a defecation-sulfitation refining system. The production stages include the sugarcane weighing station, the milling station (juice extraction), the refining station, the evaporation station, the cooking and cooling station (crystallization), the centrifuge station, up to the packaging station for the main product, sugar. The quality of all stages is strictly monitored through testing at the Individual Yield Analysis (ARI) Laboratory and the Quality Assurance (QA) Laboratory. The smooth operation of this factory is largely supported by the provision of utilities (water needs, steam from turbines, and electricity), handling of factory waste (solid, liquid, gas, and hazardous waste) to ensure environmental safety, and the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit to reduce work-related accidents. This report contains a special assignment titled “Performance Evaluation of the Quintuple Effect Evaporator at PT. Sinergi Gula Nusantara PG. Pagottan Madiun with a Capacity of 3300 TCD.” The evaporation station uses a multiple effect evaporator system of the Robert Calandria type, ranging from high pressure to vacuum, to efficiently concentrate clear sap. The evaluation results of the equipment's operational performance show that the total evaporation load reaches 111,794.1 kg/hour. Analysis of the steam requirement for the first effect needs 45,650 kg/hour, while the second to fifth effects each consistently require 17,310.7 kg/hour. It is also known that the percentage of heat loss from the first to the fifth effect is 2.32%, 2.52%, 3.18%, 3.31%, and 4.25%, respectively. Overall, the evaporation station system has supported the plant operation well, although it still requires regular maintenance and cleaning of caramelized syrup scale to maintain the heat efficiency of the evaporators.
