Abstract
The rapid population growth in Surabaya is driving an increasing demand for decent housing for low-income communities (MBR), while land availability is becoming increasingly limited. Apartment buildings become a land-efficient solution, but often they are still unable to meet the behavioral and social needs of their residents. This condition causes many residents to make informal spatial adaptations due to designs that insufficiently consider activity patterns, social interaction, and the communal life characteristics of MBR communities. Through a behavioral architecture approach, the design of this apartment building attempts to create a living environment that is adaptive to the physical and psychological needs of its residents. The design process is carried out using a behavior-based morphological experiment method with the theme "Adaptation for a Meaningful Life". The building mass consists of two main linear volumes, each with a void in the middle. The two masses are connected by open communal areas to support lighting, natural ventilation, and social interaction among residents. Supporting facilities such as commercial areas, educational facilities, and public spaces are strategically placed around the main mass to create a functional, humane, and sustainable environment for MBR communities in Surabaya.
