Abstract

A glycerol plant with a capacity of 50,000 tons per year is planned to be established in Cilegon, Banten. The plant will operate 24 hours per day for 330 days annually. The production process utilizes epichlorohydrin sourced from Shandong Near Chemical, China, and sodium carbonate as raw materials. The process is based on the epichlorohydrin hydrolysis method, conducted in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) under operating conditions of 80°C and 1 atm. Epichlorohydrin (99%) is diluted to 24.5% and preheated to 80°C, while sodium carbonate (99%) is dissolved into a 15% solution before being fed into the reactor. The reaction produces crude glycerol, along with sodium chloride and carbon dioxide as by-products. Excess sodium carbonate is neutralized using hydrochloric acid from PT. Asahimas Chemical, Banten. The product stream is then separated using a microfilter, where the sodium chloride solution is stored for marketing, and the 60% glycerol solution is further purified to 99.5% using a distillation column to remove residual water and epichlorohydrin. The final 99.5% liquid glycerol is stored as the main product. Glycerol is a non-toxic, safe compound widely used in food additives, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, and the synthesis of trinitroglycerine, alkyd resins, and polyurethane.
