Abstract

The bleaching earth processing industry generates large volumes of liquid waste containing acidic and corrosive chemical compounds, including H₂SO₄, Al₂(SO₄)₃, and Fe₂(SO₄)₃, which pose a significant environmental risk if left unmanaged. This study investigates the potential of utilizing liquid waste from PT. Madu Lingga as a raw material for aluminum sulfate (Al₂(SO₄)₃) synthesis through the addition of kaolin as a supplementary source of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃). The synthesis was conducted via a leaching process, in which kaolin was reacted with free sulfuric acid present in the liquid waste at an optimal temperature of 100°C. The effects of stirring speed and kaolin weight on the concentration of aluminum sulfate produced were systematically evaluated. The resulting solution was subsequently subjected to evaporation and crystallization stages to obtain the final product in solid phase. Product characterization was performed using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) for mineral composition analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for crystal morphology observation. The chemical reaction governing the synthesis is expressed as Al₂O₃(s) + 3H₂SO₄(l) → Al₂(SO₄)₃(l) + 3H₂O(l). The crystals obtained exhibited a triclinic crystal system with a hexagonal plate-like morphology, consistent with reported literature. The findings confirm that the combined utilization of industrial liquid waste and kaolin effectively enhances the yield of aluminum sulfate, producing a product that meets established quality standards for application as a coagulant in clean water treatment and wastewater processing. This approach offers a promising pathway toward sustainable waste valorization in the bleaching earth industry.
