Abstract
The Butyl Acrylate Plant was established to meet the continuously increasing domestic industrial demand and to reduce dependence on imported products. Butyl acrylate is an important chemical widely used as a raw material in the production of paints, adhesives, surface coatings, textiles, sealants, and polymer emulsions due to its flexibility, excellent adhesion properties, and resistance to weather and chemicals. The raw materials used in the production process consist of acrylic acid, n-butanol, and sulfuric acid catalyst, while the manufacturing process applies liquid-liquid esterification technology. The plant capacity is designed at 60,000 tons/year, and the plant location was selected in Cilegon, Banten, because of its proximity to raw material sources, adequate utility access, and well-developed industrial and transportation infrastructure. The Butyl Acrylate Plant utilizes an esterification process between acrylic acid and n-butanol in a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). The reaction occurs in the liquid phase with the assistance of sulfuric acid catalyst to accelerate ester formation. The process operates under specific temperature and pressure conditions to achieve optimal conversion while minimizing by-product formation. The reaction products, consisting of butyl acrylate, water, unreacted reactants, and catalyst, are then transferred to the separation unit. The purification stage is carried out using a distillation column to separate the main product from the remaining butanol. Unreacted butanol is recycled back into the process to improve raw material utilization efficiency and reduce production costs.
