Abstract
The Lapindo hot mud eruption incident in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, has not only caused significant environmental impacts but also demonstrated considerable potential as a mineral resource, particularly silica. Lapindo mud is known to contain a relatively high SiO2 content; however, the presence of impurities such as Fe2O3, CaO, and Al2O3 has limited its optimal utilization. Previous studies have shown that acid leaching methods are less effective in improving silica purity, whereas alkaline extraction methods, particularly using NaOH solution, are capable of dissolving silica more efficiently and producing silica with higher purity levels. Therefore, an appropriate extraction approach is required to maximize the utilization of Lapindo mud as an economical and environmentally friendly alternative silica source. This study aims to investigate the effect of NaOH concentration variation and precipitation time on the silica yield extracted from Lapindo mud, as well as its application as a silica source in the synthesis of mesoporous ZSM-5. The results showed that increasing NaOH concentration and precipitation time significantly enhanced silica yield, with the highest yield of 57.78% obtained at 10 M NaOH concentration and 5 days of precipitation time. The synthesized ZSM-5 derived from Lapindo mud silica successfully formed the characteristic MFI structure, indicated by XRD peaks at 2θ around 7–9° and 23–25°, and exhibited mesoporous characteristics with pore sizes ranging from 2–50 nm and a surface area exceeding 250 m2/g. These findings indicate that silica extracted from Lapindo mud has strong potential as an effective alternative raw material for the synthesis of mesoporous ZSM-5 catalysts.
