Abstract

Advances in metaverse technology have transformed the way individuals interact and express their identities in digital spaces. Roblox, as one of the world’s most popular metaverse platforms, offers avatar customization features that are central to the formation of its users’ virtual identities. However, not all players are able to display their desired identity through their avatars due to limitations in customization options, the cost of exclusive items, and the gap between their real identity and the ideal identity they wish to project. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing Generation Z’s acceptance of avatar usage on the Roblox platform by integrating a modified Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Metaverse Technology (UTAUMT). The study employs a quantitative approach using data from 531 active Roblox users in Indonesia who have made avatar customization transactions, analyzed via SEM-PLS. The results indicate that Metaverse Performance Expectancy, Metaverse Social Influence, Metaverse Price Value, Metaverse Self-Efficacy, and Metaverse Habit significantly influence Metaverse Behavioral Intention, whereas Metaverse Effort Expectancy and Metaverse Hedonic Motivation do not have a significant effect. This study provides recommendations for metaverse developers to create avatar personalization features that better support users’ virtual identity representation and social interactions in the era of digital identity.
