Abstract
This research was conducted to determine the recovery rate of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) from bittern, a concentrated liquid waste from salt production that still contains 30.44% NaCl, but also has significant impurities of Magnesium (Mg) ions at 6.3531% and Calcium (Ca) at 1.2265%. Driven by the high demand for industrial salt in Indonesia, this study utilized a precipitation method by adding Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) to precipitate the Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ impurity ions, followed by the crystallization of the filtrate to produce NaCl salt. The results indicated that the NaCl recovery rate and the reduction of impurities were highly dependent on the combination of NaOH concentration and stirring time. The condition yielding the lowest total impurity level (Mg and Ca), at 0.0359%, was achieved with the addition of 5.80 N NaOH concentration and a stirring time of 50 minutes. This optimum treatment resulted in the best recovery of 85.57% with an NaCl purity of 89.61%. Nevertheless, the obtained salt, which had a purity range of 72.65% to 89.61%, is classified as unrefined traditional salt (garam rakyat), which is more suitable for food preservation or traditional medicine, and has not yet met the high purity standards required by the food or pharmaceutical industries.
