Abstract
Coal fly ash is a waste product from coal combustion that contains aluminum, iron, and silica, and has the potential to be an alternative coagulant in wastewater treatment. This research was conducted to produce aluminum- and iron-based coagulants from coal fly ash waste using hydrochloric acid as a solvent using the Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE) method and to evaluate its application in reducing pollutant parameters in wastewater. Variations in HCl concentration (1-5 M) and extraction time (30-45 minutes) were examined to determine the best conditions. The results showed that the best recovery percentage was achieved at a 5 M HCl concentration variation with an extraction time of 40 minutes, resulting in a recovery percentage of 48.4% for aluminum and 78% for iron. Aluminum and iron recovery was effectively used as a coagulant to reduce pollutant parameters in textile wastewater, resulting in a reduction in color to 30 Pt-Co, turbidity to 26.9 NTU, and TSS to 46 mg/L, while maintaining a stable pH of 6. All pollutant parameters in the treated textile wastewater met the quality standards stipulated in Minister of Environment Regulation No. 25 of 2025. Therefore, these conditions demonstrate that the MAE method is an effective method for recovering aluminum and iron from coal fly ash waste, producing an alternative coagulant for industrial wastewater treatment.
