Abstract

The design of a dihydrate oxalic acid factory from porang flour and nitric acid was carried out to meet the consumption of dihydrate oxalic acid in Indonesia, which has so far been dependent on imports. The production process uses the carbohydrate hydrolysis-oxidation method, where glucomannan-rich porang flour is hydrolyzed into glucose with a sulfuric acid catalyst, then oxidized using nitric acid to produce oxalic acid. The process is designed continuously with the main stages including raw material preparation, hydrolysis reaction, oxidation reaction, evaporation, crystallization, separation, and product drying. Operating conditions are determined based on considerations of reaction conversion, product selectivity, as well as energy efficiency and process economics. The final product is dihydrate oxalic acid with purity according to industry standards. Economic evaluation shows that this factory has the potential to be established by considering aspects of raw material availability, market needs, and investment feasibility indicators such as ROI and PBP. This design is expected to provide added value to porang commodities and support the development of a biomass-based chemical industry in Indonesia.
