Abstract

This research aims to synthesize and analyze the characteristics of α-Fe₂O₃ (hematite) derived from iron sand as a candidate anode material for lithium-ion batteries. Iron sand was chosen due to its abundant availability in Indonesia and its key mineral content, such as magnetite and hematite, which have the potential to be developed into value-added materials. The synthesis process involved separation, purification, and calcination to obtain the α-Fe₂O₃ phase with good purity and crystal structure. Material characterization was performed using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) to identify the crystal phase and crystallite size, and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to determine the elemental composition. The analysis results showed that the synthesized material was dominated by the α-Fe₂O₃ phase with a high degree of purity. The crystallite size obtained was on the nanometer scale, which has the potential to increase the active surface area and electrochemical performance of the material as an anode. This research shows that local iron sand has great potential as a raw material source for α-Fe₂O₃ for energy applications, particularly in the development of lithium-ion batteries. Utilization of this natural resource is expected to support the development of functional materials based on domestic resources.
