Abstract

Porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a calcium phosphate bioceramic widely used as a biomaterial due to its similarity to natural bone mineral. This study aimed to investigate the effect of magnesium oxide (MgO) addition and the aquadest–polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) ratio on the characteristics of porous hydroxyapatite. The results showed that increasing MgO content decreased the Ca/P ratio due to the substitution of Ca²⁺ ions by Mg²⁺ in the hydroxyapatite structure, while PVA variation had no significant effect on the Ca/P ratio. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of characteristic functional groups of hydroxyapatite without harmful compounds after calcination. SEM analysis showed a porous granular morphology with interconnected pores, and BET analysis indicated a specific surface area of 7.38 m²/g with an average pore size of 2.03 nm. Although the pore size was not optimal for direct osteointegration, MgO-added porous hydroxyapatite shows potential for biomaterial applications such as bone grafts, apatite mineralization media, protein adsorption, and bone tissue reinforcement.
