Abstract
Indonesia is highly dependent on imported furfural (C5H4O2), a critical component in the agricultural, food, and lubricant industries. One potential alternative raw material for C5H4O2 production is sugarcane bagasse, which contains significant amounts of pentosans. Furfural is a biomass-based chemical compound that plays a crucial role as a raw material and intermediate in various industries, such as resins, lubricants, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and energy. Currently, Indonesia's furfural needs are met through imports due to the lack of domestically operating industrial-scale furfural plants. Therefore, the preliminary design of a furfural plant from sugarcane bagasse using a continuous process is highly relevant to study. Bagasse was chosen as the raw material due to its abundant availability as a sugarcane industry waste and its high pentosan content. The continuous process was chosen due to its higher conversion and yield, better energy efficiency, and suitability for large production capacities. The factory is planned to operate with a capacity of 50,000 tons.
