Abstract
Cellulose acetate is a widely used polymer in various industries, particularly in filter, fiber, and plastic applications. A cellulose acetate plant utilizing pulp as raw material through an acetylation process is designed with a production capacity of 65,000 tons per year to support domestic industrial demand. The process begins with the activation of cellulose pulp using glacial acetic acid, followed by acetylation to produce cellulose triacetate under controlled temperature and reaction time with acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The resulting mixture is then neutralized using a 38% magnesium acetate solution to remove residual sulfuric acid. Subsequently, cellulose triacetate undergoes hydrolysis at high temperature with the addition of water to form cellulose acetate flakes and to terminate the acetylation reaction. The product is separated from impurities using a rotary drum vacuum filter, dried in a rotary dryer, and finally packaged for distribution.
