Abstract

This study presents a preliminary design of a Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP) plant using phosphoric acid and sodium carbonate as raw materials through a combined single-stage and double-stage process. The plant is designed with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year and is planned to be located in Padangan District, Bojonegoro Regency, East Java. The selected process combines neutralization, drying, and polymerization stages using a spray dryer and rotary kiln to achieve high conversion efficiency and product quality. The combined process offers higher yield, better product consistency, and operational flexibility compared to conventional single-stage or double-stage processes. Material and energy balances, equipment specifications, utilities, plant layout, and safety systems were evaluated as part of the design. Economic analysis indicates that the project is financially feasible, with a Return on Investment (ROI) of 25.4%, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 20.7%, a Payback Period (PBP) of approximately 4 years and 1 month, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 30.64%. The establishment of this plant is expected to reduce dependence on imports, meet increasing domestic demand, and support the development of the chemical industry in Indonesia.
