Abstract
ABSTRACT Bride trafficking constitutes a form of human trafficking that predominantly targets women, who are commodified and exploited as brides. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam has emerged as one of the countries most affected, with a significant number of women becoming victims of forced cross-border marriages, to China. The high demand for Vietnamese women as brides is largely attributed to the ease of access and Vietnam’s strategic geographical position along the Vietnam–China border. Beyond geographical factors, this phenomenon is further driven by structural conditions such as poverty, limited educational opportunities, restricted access to decent employment, gender inequality within society, the presence of organized human trafficking networks, and inadequate legal protection provided by the state. This study examines how the phenomenon of bride trafficking involving Vietnamese women to China has been politically constructed as an existential threat to human security and subsequently securitized by the Vietnamese government, using Barry Buzan’s securitization theory through its six key elements: securitizing actor, speech act, existential threat, referent object, extraordinary measures, and audience. Keywords: Bride Trafficking, Vietnamese Government, China, Securitization, Women
