Abstract
This study aims to analyze the construction of discourse in Kompas.com’s online news coverage regarding the rejection of the revision of the Regional Head Election Law (Pilkada Law) in 2024, which sparked debates between the House of Representatives and the Constitutional Court, as well as widespread opposition from civil society due to its perceived potential to weaken democracy and regional autonomy. The urgency of this study lies in the strategic role of online news media in shaping public opinion and influencing public understanding of critical political issues, particularly amid democratic dynamics and the growing reliance on digital media as a primary source of political information. This study employs a qualitative approach using Teun A. Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis model, which includes text structure, social cognition, and social context analyses. The data were obtained through documentation of five Kompas.com news articles published between August 21 and September 30, 2024. The findings indicate that Kompas.com tends to present relatively neutral coverage by emphasizing the role of the Constitutional Court as a guardian of the constitution and by presenting legal and political arguments in a balanced manner.
