Abstract

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a seasonal vegetable belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, and its production is strongly influenced by the proportion of female and male flowers. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of various plant growth regulators (PGRs) and different application methods on the growth and yield of baby cucumbers, particularly in addressing the decline in production caused by flowering problems. The research was conducted in Kembang Village, Pacitan Regency, East Java, using a randomized block design with two factors: type of growth regulator (gibberellin, paclobutrazol, ethephon) and application methods (drenching, foliar spray, seed soaking). The parameters observed included germination rate, plant height, time of female flower appearance, number of female flowers, fruit weight per fruit, total fruit weight, and fruit set. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that there was an interaction between the types of plant growth regulators and the application methods on plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, number of branches, number of female flowers, fruit length, fruit diameter, and fruit weight per fruit. The best combination of plant growth regulator and application method that can be recommended overall is the use of gibberellin applied through seed soaking.
