Abstract
This study evaluates the influence of cutting speed and plate thickness on the quality of cuts produced by a gas cutting machine in an industrial fabrication environment. The research was carried out during an internship program at PT Aneka Jasa Teknik Gresik, where cutting operations using oxy-fuel technology are applied routinely in the manufacturing process. The experiment involved three variations of cutting speed 3 mm/s, 8 mm/s, and 13 mm/s applied to steel plates with thicknesses of 2 mm, 10 mm, and 20 mm. Each test was conducted under consistent operating parameters, including neutral flame settings, fixed oxygen and gas pressures, and controlled nozzle distance. The evaluation focused on cut groove width, surface roughness, slag formation, and completeness of the cut. The results indicate that cutting speed significantly affects the cut quality and must be adjusted according to material thickness. Higher speeds produced cleaner cuts on thin plates, while thicker plates required lower speeds to ensure adequate heat penetration and reduce slag accumulation. The best results for 2 mm plates were achieved at 13 mm/s, for 10 mm plates at 8 mm/s, and for 20 mm plates at 3 mm/s. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of proper parameter selection for achieving efficient and high-quality cutting outcomes in industrial applications. This study also contributes practical insights for operators and supports improved process standardization within fabrication workflows.
