Abstract

The turning process on SS 304 material for the manufacture of prosthetic leg clamp adapters often encounters problems in the form of high tool wear and reduced tool life. Cutting parameter settings are an important factor in obtaining an efficient, precise, and economical machining process. This study uses the Taguchi method with an L9 orthogonal array to analyze the effect of rotational speed, feed rate, cutting depth, and tool type on tool wear and life. The analysis was conducted through S/N ratio and ANOVA calculations, accompanied by confirmation experiments to validate the optimum parameter combination. The analysis results showed that cutting depth and rotational speed were the factors that had the greatest influence on both responses. The optimal parameters for carbide and CBN tools were obtained at a rotational speed of 480 rpm, a feed rate of 0.1 mm/rev, and a cutting depth of 0.1 mm. Meanwhile, ceramic tools achieved the best conditions at a combination of 750 rpm, 0.14 mm/rev, and 0.1 mm. The lowest wear values achieved were 0.0156 grams for carbide tools, 0.0144 grams for ceramic tools, and 0.0156 grams for CBN tools. The maximum tool life was 18.64 minutes for carbide and CBN tools and 18.55 minutes for ceramic tools. The Taguchi method is effective in determining the optimum cutting parameters in the SS 304 turning process. Proper parameter settings can minimize wear, extend tool life, and increase the efficiency of clamp adapter manufacturing. The results of this study can be applied to other prosthetic components or industries that use SS 304 material
