Abstract
The creation of North Kalimantan Province in 2012 brought about changes in the regional economic structure. This research aims to analyze the economic potential, sectoral contribution, competitiveness, and economic classification of five regions (Malinau, Bulungan, Tana Tidung, Nunukan, and Tarakan City) during the period before the creation (2007–2011) and after the creation (2013–2017). This quantitative research with a descriptive approach uses secondary data analyzed through Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share (SS), and Klassen Typology. The results indicate a change in the economic base from two sectors (mining and quarrying, and manufacturing) to five leading sectors post-creation, including agriculture, forestry, and fishing; construction; transportation and warehousing; and public administration. The contribution of the mining and quarrying sector decreased post-creation but remained dominant in the regional economy. Regional competitiveness increased in the agriculture and public administration sectors. The economic structure shifted from extractive dependency towards diversification in the construction, transportation, information technology, and services sectors. The Klassen Classification shows an increase in leading sectors post-creation, reflecting a more resilient and sustainable economy.
