Abstract
Alumina–silica is a versatile material widely used in various industries. This study utilizes rice husk ash as a source of silica (SiO₂) and aluminum sulfate (Al₂(SO₄)₃) as a source of alumina. The aim of this research is to synthesize catalyst-grade alumina–silica, determine the effect of sodium silicate concentration (dilution ratios from 1:4 to 1:8), and evaluate the effect of aluminum sulfate addition volume (50–150 mL) under different pH conditions on the material’s composition and morphology. The synthesis was carried out using the precipitation method at room temperature. The resulting material was characterized using SEM-EDX and XRD, and subsequently tested for its performance as a heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel production from waste cooking oil via transesterification. The results indicate that both the dilution ratio and the aluminum sulfate volume significantly influence the material’s morphology, where dilution ratios of 1:4 and 1:5 produced particles with a spherical morphology and tight interparticle spacing. The best catalytic performance was obtained at a sodium silicate dilution ratio of 1:4 with the addition of 100 mL of aluminum sulfate at pH 7, producing biodiesel with a yield of 69.8%, a density of 890 kg/m³, a viscosity of 5.7 cSt, and a cetane number above 62.3.
