Abstract

Banana leaf petioles and midribs are lignocellulosic wastes rich in cellulose but remain underutilized. This study aims to investigate the kinetics of cellulose hydrolysis reaction from three banana cultivars (kepok, susu, and raja) into glucose using sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) as a catalyst. The variables studied were temperature (70–110°C) and reaction time (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 min). Kinetic data were analyzed using the Shrinking Core Model (SCM) to determine the reaction control step and reaction rate constant, and activation energy was calculated using the Arrhenius equation. The results showed that the optimum hydrolysis temperature was 110°C and the optimum time was 100 min, with the highest glucose conversion obtained from the hydrolysis of kepok banana leaf petioles and midribs at 93.29%. The rate-controlling step was film diffusion. The highest activation energy obtained was 16.445 kJ mol-1. This study demonstrates the potential of banana agricultural waste as a source of glucose, and the kinetic model obtained can provide a scientific basis for process design on a larger scale or for further research.
