Abstract

A Mononitrotoluene (MNT) production plant with a capacity of 37,000 ton·year⁻¹ is designed to be constructed in the Tangerang Industrial Area, Banten, Indonesia, on a land area of 19,000 m² and operated continuously for 24 h·day⁻¹ over 330 days·year⁻¹. MNT is produced by the nitration of toluene with nitric acid using sulfuric acid as a homogeneous catalyst. The process flowsheet comprises feed preparation, adiabatic plug-flow nitration at 90 °C, phase separation of organic and inorganic layers in a decanter, concentration and recycle of sulfuric acid via a flash drum, and washing and purification of the organic phase to obtain an MNT product with a purity of approximately 95%. The plant utilizes locally available toluene, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid and targets downstream applications in pesticides, rubber additives, synthetic pigments, and polyurethane intermediates. The economic assessment, based on a 2-year construction period and a 10-year plant life, yields a fixed-capital investment (FCI) of Rp 535,717,976,650, working-capital investment (WCI) of Rp 577,123,347,639, and a total-capital investment (TCI) of Rp 1,112,841,324,289 with a bank interest rate of 7.12%. The project shows a return on investment (ROI) of 47.16%, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 35.12%, a payback period (PBP) of 3 years and 2 months, and a break-even point (BEP) of 35.30%, indicating attractive techno-economic feasibility for MNT production in Indonesia.
