Abstract

The Sodium Nitrate Plant using sodium sulfate and calcium nitrate as raw materials through a metathesis process is designed with a production capacity of 55,000 tons/year and is located in the Krakatau Industrial Estate Cilegon (KIEC). The sodium nitrate produced has high purity and is widely used in fertilizer, glass, ceramic, water treatment, explosives, and various other chemical industries. The production process begins with dissolving sodium sulfate and calcium nitrate at 60°C, followed by reacting both solutions in a stirred tank reactor at 60°C with a residence time of 1 hour, producing a 25% sodium nitrate solution and calcium sulfate precipitate as a by-product. The precipitate is separated using a rotary drum vacuum filter, while the sodium nitrate filtrate is purified through an evaporation stage to reach a concentration of 63.5%. The concentrated solution is then crystallized, centrifuged to remove the mother liquor, dried using a rotary dryer, and finally cooled to obtain fine sodium nitrate crystals with 98% purity. Economically, the plant is feasible to establish, post-tax ROI of 25.9%, an IRR of 20.3%, a payback period of 3 years and 4 months, and a BEP of 33.25%, indicating strong profitability.
