Abstract

Cellulose acetate is synthesized from siwalan coconut fiber waste using the Emil Heuser method with variations in acetic acid volume (30–90 mL) and acetylation time (5–25 minutes). The raw material contains approximately 51.29% cellulose. The process involves delignification with 2% NaOH, bleaching with 3% H₂O₂, and acetylation using glacial acetic acid as the acetylating agent and phosphoric acid as the solvent. The highest acetyl content (34.71%) is achieved at 15 minutes of acetylation with 90 mL of glacial acetic acid. Although below the SNI standard for commercial products (39–40%), this level is adequate for biodegradable plastics and eco-friendly coatings. FTIR analysis confirms successful acetylation, indicated by characteristic carbonyl (C=O) peaks around 1740 cm⁻¹ and ester (C–O) peaks around 1230 cm⁻¹.
