Abstract

The research background stems from the high organic waste production problem in Indonesia, reaching 60-70% of total national waste (68.5 million tons/year), and the need for sustainable alternative protein sources. The research method was conducted by combining three substrate types (bran, coffee grounds, sawdust) with two catalyst types (amino acids and leachate) in seven mealworm bioconversion treatments, along with three conventional composting treatments as comparison. Parameters observed include environmental conditions (pH, temperature, humidity), larval growth (Specific Growth Rate, Survival Rate, Waste Reduction Index, Efficiency of Conversion of Digested Feed), larval nutritional content (protein, fat, moisture, ash), and compost quality (C, N, P, K, C/N ratio). Results showed that treatment F (bran + leachate) provided the best performance with Specific Growth Rate of 2.0%, Survival Rate of 95.1%, final weight of 485 mg, and highest protein content of 21.35%. Leachate proved more effective as a biological catalyst compared to amino acids due to its complete macro-nutrient content and probiotic microorganisms. Bran-based substrates produced optimal growth due to high protein content (12-16%) and complete amino acid profile, while coffee grounds and sawdust substrates showed lower growth due to anti-nutritional compounds and low protein content. Mealworm bioconversion method proved 33% more efficient, achieving stabilization in approximately 20 days compared to conventional composting (approximately 30 days), with advantages of producing dual products (compost and high-protein larval biomass), more stable environmental conditions, and no manual turning required. Keywords: bioconversion, mealworms, substrate, leachate, nutrition, organic waste, Tenebrio molitor, bran, Specific Growth Rate, Survival Rate
