Abstract

The use of cassava in Indonesia has primarily been focused on the tuber, while cassava peel is often considered waste and remains underutilized. Due to its high cellulose content, cassava peel has the potential to serve as an alternative raw material for oxalic acid production. This research aims to obtain oxalic acid with the highest yield and achieve a stable pH value by optimizing temperature and time variables in the alkaline melting process. The process begins with alkaline melting, where cassava peel powder is mixed with a KOH solution. The resulting filtrate is then treated with a 10% CaCl₂ solution, and the precipitate formed is acidified using H₂SO₄ before being filtered to obtain the oxalic acid filtrate. The filtrate is then analyzed using permanganometric titration and a pH meter. The study was conducted using temperature variations of 100, 120, 140, 160, and 180°C, with melting times of 70, 75, 80, 85, and 90 minutes. The findings indicate that the optimal conditions were at a temperature of 160°C and a melting time of 85 minutes, yielding an oxalate content of 15.7% from 5 grams of cassava peel powder, which contained 48.17% cellulose.
