Abstract
Wastewater originating from domestic and industrial activities particularly from fish processing industries contains high concentrations of suspended solids and organic matter. These pollutants elevate the levels of Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and turbidity, thereby degrading water quality and disrupting aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chitosan extracted from green mussel shells (Perna viridis) as a natural biocoagulant in comparison with the synthetic coagulant Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC) during the coagulation flocculation process for reducing TSS and turbidity in river water and fish processing wastewater. The experimental work employed the jar test method with variations in coagulant type (chitosan and PAC), dosage (chitosan: 150, 200, and 250 mg/L; PAC: 10, 20, and 30 mg/L), and pH (5, 7, and 9). The results indicated that for river water, the optimum condition for chitosan occurred at pH 5 and a dosage of 150 mg/L, achieving TSS and turbidity removal efficiencies of 82% and 87%, respectively. For fish processing wastewater, the optimum condition was obtained at pH 7 and a dosage of 200 mg/L, resulting in TSS and turbidity removals of 76% and 81%, respectively. Meanwhile, PAC reached its optimum performance at pH 7 and a dosage of 20 mg/L, yielding removal efficiencies of 84% (TSS) and 88% (turbidity) in river water, and 74% (TSS) and 80% (turbidity) in fish processing wastewater. The Polydispersity Index (PI) value of 0.013 for chitosan indicates stable floc formation, which enhances coagulation performance. These findings demonstrate that chitosan derived from green mussel shells has considerable potential as an effective, environmentally friendly, and cost-efficient natural coagulant. Hence, it can serve as a sustainable alternative to PAC for wastewater treatment applications.
