Abstract

Slaughterhouse wastewater contains high concentrations of organic matter and nitrogen compounds, which have the potential to pollute aquatic environments and require treatment before disposal. This study aimed to analyze the effect of biofilter media types and variations in detention time on the efficiency of COD and Total Ammonia (NH3-N) removal using anaerobic biofilters. This study were analyzed using a batch system with two types of biofilter media, namely rambutan and coconut shell bioballs, and three variations in detention time: 4 hours, 8 hours, and 12 hours. The anaerobic biofilter process begins with seeding and acclimatization stages to grow biofilms, followed by liquid waste treatment. The parameters analyzed were COD and Total Ammonia (NH3-N). The results showed that both media effectively supported biofilm growth and increased the efficiency of COD and Total Ammonia (NH3-N) removal. The highest efficiency was achieved at longer detention times, emphasizing the importance of the contact duration between the biofilm and pollutants. The results of the study show that the selection of appropriate biofilter media and detention time are the main factors for the success of anaerobic biofilters in processing slaughterhouse wastewater efficiently, environmentally friendly, and reducing water pollution.
