Abstract
A Dioctyl Terephthalate plant from Terephthalic Acid and 2-Ethyl Hexanol with an esterification process capacity of 65,000 tons/year will be established on Jl. Amerika, Samangraya, Citangkil District, Cilegon City, Banten Province. This plant is planned to operate 24 hours a day, 330 days a year. The main raw materials are Terephthalic Acid (C6H8O4) and 2-Ethyl Hexanol (C8H18O) with the aid of a Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) catalyst. The Terephthalic Acid concentration is 99.8%, obtained from PT. Mitsubishi Chemical Indonesia, while the 2-Ethyl Hexanol concentration is 99.5%, obtained from PT. Petro Oxo Nusantara. Dioctyl terephthalate (C24H38O4) at a concentration of 98% is a chemical widely used as a raw material for the manufacture of environmentally friendly plasticizers. This plasticizer is typically used as an additive to increase the flexibility and durability of plastic materials. Furthermore, dioctyl terephthalate is also frequently used in various sectors such as construction, automotive, cables, and packaging. Dioctyl terephthalate can be produced using three processes, one of which is the esterification process with sulfuric acid as a catalyst. Dioctyl terephthalate can be obtained through an esterification reaction between terephthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol at a moderate temperature and a reaction time of 6 hours.
