Abstract

Mahogany furniture production produces sawdust waste containing biomass components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The lignin content in mahogany sawdust can be used as a raw material for the synthesis of sodium lignosulfonate surfactants. Lignin delignification is carried out using alkali followed by lignin isolation by acid precipitation. The pure lignin isolate is then used as a raw material for the synthesis of sodium lignosulfonate surfactants through a sulfonation process. The sulfonation process is carried out by mixing the lignin isolate and sodium bisulfite solution using varying excess NaHSO3 and sulfonation times. Both variables are controlled by the addition of a 16.5% sodium hydroxide solution catalyst and maintaining the pH at pH 4. The resulting sodium lignosulfonate surfactant solution is then characterized using an FT-IR spectrophotometer and a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The best conditions were obtained at a sulfonation time of 150 minutes and a 75% excess of NaHSO3, with a sodium lignosulfonate surfactant concentration of 4100.784 mg/L.
