Abstract
The coil spring is one of the important components in the suspension system of the NT 11 (K5) bogie used in business class (K2) train carriages. Failure analysis of this component can reduce travel comfort and safety. This study was conducted to analyze the form and causes of failure of the coil spring that has experienced cracks and plastic deformation. Failure of the coil spring is often caused by excessive loads and material fatigue. The methods used in this study include macrographic and micrographic image testing, Brinell hardness testing, chemical composition testing, and static structural simulation. The test results showed the presence of cracks on the surface due to repeated loads with a typical fatigue fracture pattern. High Brinell hardness values in certain zones indicate the effect of strain hardening due to previous plastic deformation. The microstructure shows phase changes consistent with excessive mechanical treatment. From the analysis results, it is known that the main factor of failure comes from dynamic loads that exceed the material fatigue limit, which is exacerbated by local stress concentrations and variations in manufacturing quality. This study shows that improving production materials and redesigning stress concentration points is necessary to increase the spring's resistance to failure due to overload and fatigue. Keywords: bogie, material fatigue, screw spring, cracks
