Abstract

The synthesis of biodegradable styrofoam made from cassava flour and cassava stem cellulose successfully produced an environmentally friendly material with good tensile strength, water absorption, and biodegradability properties. The best test results obtained for tensile strength, water absorption, and biodegradation were 0.3 N/mm², 8.41%, and 5.33%, respectively. The values for water absorption and biodegradability met the applicable Indonesian National Standards (SNI), although the tensile strength did not yet satisfy the standard requirements. The addition of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and the thermopressing temperature were found to significantly influence the mechanical characteristics of the biodegradable styrofoam. Incorporating 20% PVA and applying a molding temperature of 180°C produced a biodegradable styrofoam with improved tensile strength, water resistance, and degradability.
