Abstract
Barium sulfate scaling is a significant and complex issue in industrial processes, requiring effective control strategies to minimize its formation. This study investigates the influence of additive concentration (ZnCl₂ and CuCl₂), stirring speed, and stirring time on BaSO₄ precipitation using a Box–Behnken Design within the Response Surface Methodology framework. BaSO₄ at 3000 ppm was produced by reacting BaCl₂ and Na₂SO₄ at 50°C, and the resulting data were used to develop a mathematical model for predicting optimal operating conditions. The optimal conditions for minimizing BaSO₄ precipitation using ZnCl₂ were achieved at 24 ppm additive concentration, 48.48 rpm stirring speed, and 25 minutes stirring time, yielding 0.22727 g of precipitate. For CuCl₂, the optimal conditions were 24 ppm concentration, 77.576 rpm stirring speed, and 54.2929 minutes stirring time, producing 0.2393 g of precipitate. The results indicate that ZnCl₂ is more effective than CuCl₂ in reducing barium sulfate precipitation.
