Abstract
Fishermen are one of the coastal community groups that are vulnerable to economic uncertainty due to their dependence on fishing yields and natural conditions. Weather changes, price fluctuations, and limited access to production facilities often affect their income and overall welfare. In Klampis Village, the increasing number of fishermen has not been accompanied by an increase in fish catches, resulting in various economic problems within fishermen’s households. This study aims to identify the characteristics of fishermen in Klampis Village, Klampis District, Bangkalan Regency, and to analyze household income and fishermen’s welfare levels based on the Fishermen’s Exchange Rate (Nilai Tukar Nelayan/NTN). The research method employed is quantitative descriptive, with 60 fishermen selected using purposive sampling from a total population of 150 fishermen. Data analysis was conducted through household income calculations and NTN analysis to describe the economic welfare conditions of fishermen’s households. The results showed that most fishermen in Klampis Village are in the productive age range of 31–40 years (33,33%), with the majority having completed elementary education (40%). Most of them have 21–30 years of fishing experience (33,33%) and use privately owned fishing gear (66,67%). In addition, the majority of fishermen have four family dependents (36,67%), with an average fishing duration of 5–8 hours per day (41,67%), and 18 respondents (30%) are recipients of government assistance. The average household income of fishermen is Rp1,331,352 per month, while the average household expenditure reaches Rp5,199,788 per month. The NTN value of 0.256 (<1) indicates that household expenditures exceed income. This condition reflects that fishermen’s households in Klampis Village are in an economic deficit situation, which implies limited ability to meet basic needs and increases the level of economic and social vulnerability among fishermen.
