Abstract

This research aims to utilize kapok fruit fiber (Ceiba pentandra) as a source of cellulose for the production of cellulose acetate membranes using the phase inversion method. The selection of this material is based on its high cellulose content and natural abundance, making it a promising renewable and environmentally friendly alternative. The experimental process involved several stages, including delignification using 17.5% NaOH to remove lignin, bleaching with H₂O₂ to purify the fibers, acetylation with glacial acetic acid and phosphoric acid to produce cellulose acetate, and membrane casting using acetone as a solvent at various concentrations (65–85%). The analysis results showed that kapok fiber contains 39.62% cellulose, 29.57% hemicellulose, and 23.25% lignin. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of cellulose acetate through the presence of carbonyl (C=O) and ester (O–H stretch) functional groups, indicating successful acetylation. SEM characterization revealed an asymmetric and porous (spongelike) morphology typical of filtration membranes. The highest contact angle value of 111.8° was obtained in the third delignification cycle at 65% acetone concentration with an acetyl content of 41.35%, suggesting a more hydrophobic membrane surface. In conclusion, kapok fruit fiber demonstrates significant potential as a natural raw material for cellulose acetate membrane production. The resulting membranes exhibit suitable morphological and surface properties for applications in separation, filtration, and wastewater treatment. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the membrane’s performance under real operating conditions to enhance its industrial applicability and promote the utilization of local natural resources.
