Abstract
Hexamethylenetetramine is an organic compound widely used in various industrial applications. This compound is utilized as a raw material for phenolic and melamine resins, preservatives in the pharmaceutical industry, and other industrial chemicals. The demand for hexamethylenetetramine in Indonesia is still dependent on imports, indicating that local production capacity remains insufficient. Therefore, establishing a hexamethylenetetramine plant in Indonesia presents a significant opportunity. The planned hexamethylenetetramine plant will be established in 2030 with a production capacity of 75,000 tons per year, located in the JIIPE industrial area, Gresik. The plant will operate for 330 days per year and employ a workforce of 189 employees. Hexamethylenetetramine production uses the Weiss process, where 37% formalin solution is reacted with ammonia gas, which is introduced into the bottom of the reactor through a sparger. Excess ammonia gas is then directed to a scrubber where water is added, forming ammonium hydroxide solution. This process not only reduces ammonia emissions to the atmosphere but also produces a solution that can be reused in industrial operations. The resulting hexamethylenetetramine solution is fed into a vertical separator to remove methanol content. The methanol-free solution is then fed to an evaporator to remove water, producing a concentrated hexamethylenetetramine solution with a concentration of 45.2%. After that, the concentrated solution is crystallized in a crystallizer and the crystals are separated from the mother liquor using a centrifuge. The hexamethylenetetramine crystals are then dried using a rotary dryer and size-standardized with a ball mill to achieve 100 mesh. The final product, with a purity above 99%, is stored in a product storage silo.
