Abstract

This Practical Work Report was carried out at PG Kebon Agung, Malang, East Java, from September 2 to September 30, 2024. PG Kebon Agung is a sugar manufacturing company that processes sugarcane into white crystal sugar (GKP) through several production stages, including preparation, milling, purification, evaporation, crystallization, separation, and packaging. The purpose of this practical work is to understand the production process flow and to perform the calculation of heat transfer surface area in four units of multiple-effect evaporators. The evaporation station plays a critical role in concentrating raw juice into high-brix thick juice by removing water content. The evaporators are arranged in a multiple-effect system to increase thermal efficiency by utilizing vapor from one effect to heat the next. The calculation of heat transfer surface area was based on mass balance, energy balance, operating temperature, steam pressure, and viscosity changes of the juice. The results of the calculations showed that the surface area varies in each evaporator due to differences in heat transfer coefficients and temperature gradients. Through this practical work, the author gained insight into industrial sugar processing operations, equipment performance analysis, and technical considerations in designing and maintaining evaporator systems. This experience is expected to support further competence in chemical engineering practice.
