Abstract

This preliminary design project aims to plan the establishment of an Aluminum Oxide (Al₂O₃) plant from Aluminum Chloride (AlCl₃) through an oxidation process with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year in solid form. Aluminum oxide, also known as alumina, is an important industrial material widely used as a catalyst, gas purifier, electrical insulator, and raw material for ceramics and biomedical components. The process involves sublimating solid AlCl₃ into gaseous form, followed by oxidation with oxygen at a temperature of 1000°C and a pressure of 1 atm in a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) to produce aluminum oxide and chlorine gas as by-products. The products are then separated using a bag filter to obtain solid alumina and gaseous chlorine, oxygen, and nitrogen. The plant is planned to be built in Bekasi, West Java, operating for 330 days per year. From the economic evaluation, the total capital investment is Rp 2.47 trillion, with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 14.32%, Rate of Return on Investment (ROI) before tax of 26.83%, after tax of 20.13%, Payback Period (PBP) of 2 years and 12 months, and a Break Even Point (BEP) of 30.91%. Based on these results, the proposed aluminum oxide plant is technically and economically feasible to be established and is expected to help reduce alumina imports while supporting domestic industrial growth.
