Abstract
This preliminary plant design aims to produce methyl benzoate from benzoic acid and methanol through an esterification process with a production capacity of 55,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to be located in the Samarinda Industrial Estate (SINDE), East Kalimantan. Methyl benzoate is widely used in the chemical industry as a solvent, fragrance component in perfumes and cosmetics, and as a natural attractant in agriculture. The production process involves reacting benzoic acid and methanol at 60°C and 1 atm using Hβ zeolite as a catalyst in a fixed-bed reactor. The reaction products are then purified through three distillation columns to obtain methyl benzoate with 99.99% purity. Economic analysis indicates a fixed capital investment of Rp412,088,896,030 and working capital of Rp416,827,581,709. With a total annual production cost of Rp1,667,310,326,837, the project achieves a pre-tax ROI of 26.45%, post-tax ROI of 19.83%, IRR of 12.60%, payback period of 3 years and 3 months, and a break-even point of 33.58%. Based on these results, the establishment of the methyl benzoate plant is technically and economically feasible to implement. Keywords: Methyl Benzoate, Esterification, Hβ Zeolite
