Abstract
This preliminary plant design aims to produce phenol from iodobenzene and sodium carbonate through a hydrolysis process using copper oxide (Cu₂O) as a catalyst with a production capacity of 60,000 tons per year. The plant is planned to be built in the KIEC Industrial Area, Cilegon, Banten. Phenol (C₆H₅OH) is an important chemical compound used in the production of phenolic resins, bisphenol-A, caprolactam, alkylphenols, aniline, pesticides, explosives, disinfectants, dyes, and textiles. The process begins with mixing iodobenzene and the catalyst, dissolving sodium carbonate in water, and feeding the reactants into an autoclave reactor operating at 160°C and 7 atm to form phenol according to the reaction 2C₆H₅I + Na₂CO₃ + H₂O → 2C₆H₅OH + 2NaI + CO₂. The product mixture is separated using a decanter centrifuge, crystallized, and purified to achieve 99.9% phenol purity. The plant, operating continuously for 330 days per year and employing 184 workers on a 38,863 m² site, requires a total capital investment of Rp 1,693,016,332,893 with a total production cost of Rp 3,840,115,884,791 per year. Economic evaluation indicates a return on investment (ROI) before tax of 39.24%, after tax of 29.43%, an internal rate of return (IRR) of 20%, a payback period (PBP) of 3 years and 3 months, and a break-even point (BEP) of 34.56%. Based on the technical and economic analysis, the design of this phenol plant is considered feasible and has strong potential to reduce Indonesia’s dependence on imported phenol while supporting the growth of the national chemical industry.
