Abstract
This study aims to utilize bittern, a liquid waste product from salt ponds, as an environmentally friendly alternative coagulant to reduce TSS and turbidity in tofu wastewater. Bittern was activated using three types of strong bases, namely Ca(OH)₂, KOH, and NaOH, with a dosage variation of 40–60 mL and a concentration of 4–8%. The optimization process was carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with a Central Composite Design (CCD) to determine the best operating conditions. The results showed that all activators were able to improve the performance of bittern as a coagulant, with different effectiveness in each treatment. The NaOH activator gave the best results at a dose of 50 mL and a concentration of 3.17–4%, resulting in TSS removal efficiency of 91–92% and turbidity of 93–95%. The KOH activator reached optimal conditions at a dose of 50 mL and a concentration of 6%, with a TSS efficiency of 87% and turbidity of 93%, while Ca(OH)₂ at a dose of 50 mL and a concentration of 6% resulted in TSS removal of 86% and turbidity of 85%. Based on the analysis results, the type of activator has a relationship with concentration and dose in reducing TSS and turbidity. KOH and Ca(OH)₂ activators show a relationship pattern that is more influenced by the interaction of dose and concentration. Meanwhile, NaOH has a linear relationship (not significant) at concentration and quadratic at dose, indicating the existence of an optimum point that needs further research.
