Abstract
A 1,3-butadiene plant with a capacity of 60,000 tons per year will be built in the JIPEE Industrial Area, Gresik, and will operate 24 hours a day for 330 days per year. The plant uses ethanol from PT Enero as the raw material, processed through a two-stage dehydrogenation system with chromium alumina catalyst in Reactor 1 and tantala–silica catalyst in Reactor 2. The ethanol is vaporized, heated, and fed into fixed-bed multitube reactors to first produce acetaldehyde, which is then converted into 1,3-butadiene. The reactor effluent is sent to a separator, followed by purification in two distillation columns. The first column produces 99% pure 1,3-butadiene, while the second separates water from the ethanol–acetaldehyde mixture; the water stream goes to water treatment, and the top product is recycled back to Reactor 2. The resulting 1,3-butadiene is used as a monomer in polymer and synthetic rubber industries.
